Piloting the resource in a school setting

Thuma Mina Teaching conducted a new pilot in several schools across the Western Cape in Term 1 of 2022. Our focus was on testing the Grade 8 and 9 Economics and Management Sciences resource that was developed with the generous sponsorship from Capitec Bank. The EMS lessons specifically focus on financial literacy which is the precursor to Accounting. To view the results of the study:

We conducted a feasibility study in several schools in the Western Cape with the support of the Western Cape Education Department. This study looked at the extent to which learners in no-fee schools have mobile and internet access (716 learners were tested across 10 schools). It also sought to test the impact that our video lessons have on learner engagement and learning outcomes by doing a small randomised control trial. The impact report can be accessed here and shows encouraging learning gains in schools that made use of the resource.

Our first pilot of the Thuma Mina Teaching video-lesson series commenced at the Andrew Murray Children's Home in Wellington. The video-lessons were well received by the learners both in terms of learner engagement and content comprehension.
