Leopold van Velden

FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

THUMA MINA TEACHER: HISTORY GRADE 8 & 9

Leopold has been a teacher for the past 8 years after having studied Education at Stellenbosch University followed by an Honours degree in Educational Management at CPUT.

He is a passionate History teacher and enjoys exploring ways in which technology can be used to improve teaching, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He has taught at both ends of South Africa’s divided school spectrum. His teaching journey started at a school in the Cape Flats and then in the countryside of Barrydale. From there he moved to High School Stellenbosch.

He hopes to continue to produce video lessons and to return to teaching at an under-resourced school.

His main duties at Thuma Mina Teaching include recruiting teachers, content development and presenting History for Grades 8 & 9.

Silke Rothkegel van Velden

CO-FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR

Fundraising, Coordination, Communication

Silke is a project manager at Research on Socio-economic Policy [RESEP], a research unit at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Economics. She holds a Master’s degree in Economics of Education.

She is passionate about education quality and equality.

Her main duties at Thuma Mina Teaching include fundraising, communications, filming, and disseminating the resources we produce, far and wide.

Lerato Matee

VIDEO EDITOR

Lerato recently completed her film production studies at Film School Africa where she majored in post-production, while doing pre-production and production subjects as minors. These included script writing, directing and camera work.

Lerato is passionate about education and loves making learning visually appealing and easy to comprehend.

Tracey Botha

FUNDRAISER

Tracey has over 20 years of corporate experience with major brands such as MTN, Nedbank and Sanlam. She has raised funds for CHOC, Cotlands and a UK-based NPO, amongst others.

Her passion is to make a tangible difference in other people's lives and this is what drives her to achieve maximum success in the fundraising arena.


Juliana Louw

THUMA MINA TEACHER

EMS: Grade 7 - 9 Script writer and peer-reviewer

Juliana completed her B. Com Management Science degree from Stellenbosch University, majoring in Marketing, Logistics, and Project Management. Thereafter she completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Stellenbosch in 2013. She currently teaches Grade 8-9 EMS and Grade 10-12 Business Studies. She is also the subject head for EMS.

Current school: Strand High School, Strand, Western Cape.

Catherine McNaught Davis

INTERN

Catherine has a Bachelor of Arts in Language and Culture and is a recent Post-Graduate Certificate in Education graduate from the University of Stellenbosch.

She is passionate about using education to empower people and working to make it more accessible.


Marie Midcalf

VIDEO-EDITOR

Marie Midcalf has been editing for 15 years. She obtained her degree from AFDA in Cape Town. A few years into her career, Marie started doing camera work too. She has had the pleasure of working with companies and organisations such as Rich Red Productions, Bloomberg tv, Edufundi, The Global Initiative, PSG Asset Management and Ranyaka, among others.

In 2013, Marie started volunteering for an organisation bringing filmmaking and story-telling to local communities. Marie now serves as the Associate Director of that organisation: Film School Africa - a non-profit, offering a 3-year college level filmmaking course as well as bursaries to attend.

Marie is thrilled to be a part of the Thuma Mina vision, bringing accessible education to all South Africans.

Nadiyah Groenewald

THUMA MINA TEACHER

Natural Sciences: Grade 8 & 9

Nadiyah completed a BSc in Human Life Sciences and Psychology degree from the University of Stellenbosch, majoring in the following subjects: Genetics, Biochemistry, Physiology and Psychology. Thereafter she enrolled and completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Stellenbosch in 2014.

Esmarie Visagie

THUMA MINA TEACHER

MATHEMATICS: GRADE 9

Esmarie completed her Bachelors in Education at the University of Pretoria in 2017. She majored in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. She currently teaches Mathematics for Grades 8, 9 & 10 as well as Physical Science for Grade 10.

Chris Jacobs

THUMA MINA TEACHER

MATHEMATICS: GRADE 8

Chris completed his B.Sc Chemistry and Ocean & Atmospheric Dynamics at UCT in 2010. Thereafter he pursued his PGCE with specialization in Mathematics, Physics and Natural Science at UCT (2011) as well as his B.Sc Hons (UCT, 2012) and lastly his M.Sc Ocean and Climate Dynamics at UCT in 2014.

Emma van Vuuren

Liza Serrao

Liza completed her Bacherlors in Education from the North-West University Potchefstroom, majoring in the following subjects: Mathematics and Accounting followed by an Honours degree in Educational Management at UNISA.

Petrus Uys

THUMA MINA TEACHER

GEOGRAPHY: GRADE 8 & 9

Petrus completed his BA in Sport Science, majoring in Geography at Stellenbosch University in 2016. He has enjoyed 4 years of Geography teaching at Hoërskool Stellenbosch and is excited to join the TMT movement and convey a passion for Geography to young students.

Tiffany Schwegmann

THUMA MINA TEACHER

MATHEMATICS: GRADE 8

Tiffany completed her BCom Mathematical Science degree at the University of Stellenbosch, majoring in Operations Research. Thereafter she completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Stellenbosch in 2016. She started her teaching career at Hottentots Holland in Somerset West, but at the start of 2018 she exchanged the sea for the Cape Winelands.
